L'année 2025 a été marqué par de nombreux changements pour le collectif Grain&Sens. Dans cet article, nous souhaitons vous faire part de cette évolution. // 2025 represented a lot of changes for the collective, Grain&Sens. In this article, we would like to share some of that movement with you.

The end of a chapter : THE founding families

Pour la première fois, nous avons dit au revoir à l'une des familles fondatrices du projet : Astrid, Ed, Will et Elio. Après sept années riches en partages, en apprentissages et en rires, nos chers amis ont décidé de quitter Lavenant. Cette transition nous a permis de nous remémorer et de célébrer les moments passés ensemble. Nous souhaitons partager avec vous ci-dessous quelques exemples de leur contribution à la réussite de ce projet : // For the first time, we said goodbye to one of the founding families of the project, Astrid, Ed, Will and Elio. After 7 rich years of living, learning and laughing together, our dear friends decided to leave Lavenant. This transition invited us to both reflect and celebrate our time together. Below, we would like to share with you all, some of the ways they made this project what it is today:

Le Collectif en 2017 // The Collective in 2017

Astrid était à l'origine des éco-camps et, grâce à son rêve, notre projet s'est ouvert aux enfants comme aux adultes. Elle a été une véritable mentor pour les jeunes adultes que nous accueillions pour leur service civique, et une source d'inspiration par sa détermination et sa grande générosité. Elle nous faisait rire et nous permettait de garder toujours les pieds sur terre. // Astrid was the source of the eco-camps and thanks to her dream, our project became one for children and adults alike. She was a mentor to the young adults we welcomed for civil service, and an inspiration through both her determination and her warm soul. She kept us laughing and was always a gardien of perspective.

Ed était toujours la personne que vous pouviez appeler si le toit de votre yourte s'envolait lors d'une tempête de neige ! // Ed was always the person you could call if the roof blew off your yurt in a snow storm!

Ed était notre artiste « pratique », c’est-à-dire qu’il avait le don d’allier beauté et fonctionnalité ! Son talent a été d’un grand secours pour G&S grâce à ses photos et vidéos touchantes, essentielles à la construction et à la communication de notre projet. Il a immortalisé en images six adultes et quatre enfants se lançant dans une vie collective audacieuse. Son amour transparaissait aussi bien dans ses créations en bois que dans son jeu de guitare. // Ed was our “practical” artist…meaning he has a gift for blending beauty and praticality! His talent was a great service to G&S through his touching photos and videos which were essential in building and communicating about our dream. He captured on camera, 6 adults and 4 children taking a crazy leap into collective life. His love was also made visible through his woodwork and audible through his guitar playing.

Nous pouvions toujours compter sur Elio et Will pour nous impressionner par leurs talents d'acrobates et leur sensibilité pour le monde naturel (ils étaient notre équipe de sauvetage d'animaux blessés). // We could always count on Elio and Will to impress us with their acrobacy skills and sensitivity for the natural world (they were our injured animal rescue team).

Même s'ils ne vivent plus à Lavenant, ils resteront toujours une partie essentielle de l'histoire de Grain&Sens et sans eux, nous ne serions pas là aujourd'hui à Lavenant. // While they may not live at Lavenant anymore, they will always been an fundamental part of the Grain&Sens story and without them, we would not be here at Lavenant today.

Le départ d'une « famille fondatrice » nous a également fait prendre conscience de l'absence de procédure de sortie pour les actionnaires souhaitant quitter le projet. Je partage cette information afin d'encourager d'autres collectifs à élaborer leur procédure avant qu'elle ne soit nécessaire (on nous l'avait également conseillé, mais nous ne l'avions jamais considérée comme prioritaire). Un peu d'anticipation peut faire toute la différence et nous permettre de nous concentrer sur l'aspect humain de l'aventure plutôt que de passer trop de temps dans les aspects juridiques et financiers. Malgré notre manque de préparation, j'ai été émerveillée de constater la persistance de l'amour, la force de notre affection mutuelle et de notre attachement à Grain&Sens, notre « bébé » en quelque sorte. // The departure of a “founding family” also brought to our attention that we never developed a “exiting procedure” for share holders wishing to leave the project. I share this here to help encourage other collectives to eleborate their procedure before it is needed ( we were also advised to do so but never prioritized it). A little anticipation can go a long way and creates more space for celebrating the human aspect of the adventure instead of having to spend so much time in the legal/financial realm. Despite our lack of preperation for this moment, I have been amazed to see how love persists and our care for eachother and for Grain&Sens, our “baby” of some sorts, has held strong.

Nous sommes ravis qu'ils soient restés à proximité, ce qui nous permet de continuer à entretenir nos relations, de partager un thé ou un repas de temps en temps, et, espérons-le, de collaborer à nouveau d'une manière ou d'une autre un jour prochain ! // We are delighted that they have stayed nearby, allowing us to continue to nourish our relationships, share a tea or meal from time to time, and hopefully one day soon, collaborate in some form together again!

Un nouveau chapitre commence : Grain&Sens renaissance // A new chapter begins : Grain&Sens Renissance

Astrid et Ed ont annoncé leur départ à l'automne 2024. Nous avons rapidement compris (grâce à l'intervention de notre médiateur Ramin) que pour la survie de Grain&Sens, il était crucial de trouver de nouveaux résidents pour rejoindre l'aventure. Nous avons donc élaboré un processus d'intégration et mis en place une période d'essai d'un an. Durant cette période, les personnes en période d'intégration seraient invitées à vivre pleinement l'expérience Lavenant au sein de Grain&Sens. Cela impliquerait leur participation aux réunions, aux actions collectives, aux activités de cohésion d'équipe, etc. Au bout d'un an, si les membres du collectif et la personne étaient satisfaits de la vie et du travail en commun, cette dernière serait invitée à rejoindre officiellement le projet (en intégrant la structure juridique pour devenir associés). Après quelques mois de recherche et de réflexion, nous avons trouvé huit personnes courageuses, prêtes à tenter l'expérience Lavenant. // Astrid and Ed announced their departure in the fall of 2024. We quickly realized (accampagnied by our mediator Ramin) that for the survival of Grain&Sens, it had become crucial to find new inhabitants to join in on the adventure. So we elaborated an “integration process” and developed the idea of a 1 year trial period. During this time, the people in “integration” would be invited to fully experience life at Lavenant as part Grain&Sens. This implies participation in meetings, collective actions, team building, etc. After a year, if both the existing collective members and the person are happy with living/ working together, the person is invited officially join the project (enter into the judiciel structure to become a share holder). After a few months of searching and quite a bit of reflection, we found 8 brave individuals ready to give life at Lavenant a try.

Depuis septembre, nous avons pu nous offrir un week-end ensemble pour nous amuser et mieux nous connaître. Dans les projets collectifs, il est parfois difficile de privilégier les relations humaines, mais elles constituent le fondement de tout le reste. // Since september, we have been able to take a weekend away just to have fun together and get to know eachother better. In engaged collective projects, it can be hard sometimes to prioritize the human relationships, but it is the foundation apon which all of the rest stands.

Nous avons également passé une journée à partager nos rêves et les raisons de notre engagement dans ce projet. Cela nous a permis de mieux comprendre ce qui motive chacun à être présent. Nous avons écrit ces rêves sur des rubans que nous avons suspendus à notre arbre sacré, le tilleul. Les voir flotter au vent nous rappelle les efforts nécessaires pour que les rêves se réalisent ! // We also spent a day sharing our dreams and reasons for engaging/continuing to engage with this project. This allowed us to better understand what motivates everyone to be here. We wrote these dreams on ribbons that we hung from our sacred tree, the tieulle. Seeing them blow in the wind reminds us of the movement it takes to make dreams come true!

Enfin, Bena (l’ancienne propriétaire de Lavenant, qui prévoit également de revenir en 2026) a proposé un atelier créatif à réaliser ensemble. Elle nous a invité à ramasser chacun un élément de la nature et à l’attacher à une couronne qui serait accrochée devant la porte de notre « nid », la maison collective. // Finally, Bena (the past owner of Lavenant who is also planning to come back in 2026) proposed a creative workshop for us all to do togehter. She invited us each to collect something in nature and to come attach it to a wreath that would hang infront of the door of our “nest”, the collective house.

Petit à petit, nous écrivons ensemble le prochain chapitre. Ces huit dernières années nous ont beaucoup appris et nous essayons de mettre ces enseignements à profit pour reconstruire, tout en laissant place à des idées nouvelles et créatives. // Little by little, we are writing the next chapter together. We learned a lot in the past 8 years that we try to put to service for rebuilding, all while leaving space for new and creative ideas.

Enfin, nous tenons à exprimer notre immense gratitude à tous celles et ceux qui ont partagé un moment avec nous ici, à Lavenant ! Vos couleurs ont contribué à la beauté de ce lieu aujourd’hui ! // Lastly, we would like to share our immense gratitude for everyone who has spent time sharing home here at Lavenant! All of your colors have painted the beauty of this place today!
